Taiwan Work Permits and ARCs
If you wish to work legally in Taiwan, you will first need to get a work permit from the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA). Normally, getting a work permit in Taiwan is fairly straight forward. Prepare the necessary documents and submit them to your employer. They should handle the rest of the process on your behalf.
...
Once you receive your Work Permit, usually within 2 weeks, you are ready to apply for an Alien Resident's Certificate (ARC).
- Photocopy of Passport. Copy every page including the cover plus the yellow embarkation card page and any entry/exit stamps concealed underneath. Sign every copy ensuring that your signature overlaps the image.
- Photocopy of current ARC, if applicable. Make sure to copy the front and back of the ARC onto a single page.
- Tax certificate from the previous year, if applicable. The tax certificate is the blue form available for free from the tax office. To get it, you will need your tax receipt or ARC.
- Six passport sized photos.
- Health Check Certificate. This must be valid for three months.
- Cancellation Letter from previous employer, if applicable.
- University Degree and photocopy. Have your degree translated into Chinese and notarized to avoid any hassles. If your name is different than that on the degree, you must also provide notarized documentation explaining the name change. For example, Marriage Certificate or Name Change Certificate.
- University Transcripts may be required so you should have them prepared as well.
- Application fee of NT$3000.
In order to qualify as a full time job, your school must record a minimum of 14 hours of work per week. The process for applying for a secondary work permit is the same as above so long as the total amount of weekly hours doesn't exceed 32.
If you do work for two schools, and both give report your hours as being over 14, you will have redundancy on your ARC. Should you leave one school, the remaining school can continue your ARC without interruption.
After two weeks of waiting, your Work Permit has finally arrived. You are ready to apply for your Work ARC.
- Photocopy of Passport. Copy every page including the cover plus the yellow embarkation card page and any entry/exit stamps concealed underneth. Sign every copy ensuring that your signature overlaps the image.
- Work Permit original plus copy.
- Current ARC, if applicable. This must be turned in in order to receive a new one. Dont worry, you will be issued proof that your old ARC is being renewed.
- Two passport sized photos. New photo sizes are 2.5 inches high by 2 inches wide and must include the shoulders.
- If applying for a Spousal or Dependent ARC, notarized proof of relationship must be shown. For example, Birth Certificate or Marriage Certificate.
- Application fee of NT$1000.
The application process takes two weeks.

Can you study and yet work at the same time in Taiwan? :)

hi there,
I am from Hong Kong.
May I know what kind of company in taiwan can apply me a working permit?
03/06/11 @ 01:03:56 pm
Chloe, one of the easiest work permit to obtain, assuming you have the proper level of education, is that of an English teacher. Work permits from other areas of employment are available. You can check with prospective employers to find out the specific requirements for the job being applied for.
Good Luck!

Overseas chinese from the Philippines with Taiwan passport is allowed to work here in Taiwan? what document(s) can the CLA provide to ensure that is acceptable to the employer?
05/06/11 @ 05:27:58 pm
I think that you should be concerned with being able to provide the CLA with proper documentation regarding your qualifications for the work being applied for. In addition, you prospective employer can only you for certain positions.
For example, if you are coming to teach English, your employer must apply for a work permit for you as a foreign teacher. You must, in turn, provide the CLA with proper documentation (university degree, foreign passport, etc.) If you are coming to Taiwan to work as an engineer, then your prospective employer must hire you according to the rules set by the CLA for hiring a foreign professional.
Because of the special situation that you find yourself in, I suggest that you contact the CLA directly. Their number in Taipei is +886 2-8590-2866.
Good Luck!
