A few years ago, I guess it was 2004, some friends and I decided to take a scooter trip from Taichung to Da Jia. Luckily for us, it was the day that Matsu (媽祖) was returning to her home temple Da Jia. She had just finished her central Taiwan journey on the backs of her followers. The festival was in full swing by mid afternoon with an endless stream of fireworks raining down on those in attendance. Black smoke, noise and lots of people made it perhaps one of my most enjoyably unique experiences here in Taiwan.
