Mr. and Mrs. Dirty Harry
Last week in China, a hostage taking ended in a bad way. This shocking video is floating around the internet depicting a plain clothes police woman shooting dead an armed robber while showing little if any regard for the wounded hostage.
According to the news report, the after a failed robbery attempt, the suspect stabbed the victim with a pair of scissors and then held her hostage. After some time, a plain clothes police officer threw a bottle of soda to the suspect. upon picking it up, the police officer fired a single shot which knocked both attacker and victim to the ground. The officer then proceeded to fire 3 more shots into the fallen attacker, killing him at the scene. The victim was treated for her injuries and is recovering.
Reactions to this incident are varied with some applauding the police officer's heroism and others angered by the severity of her actions. Chinese authorities are worried about the recent spike in "Dirty Harry" tactics on the behalf of vigilante cops. Does taking the law into your own hands work? Perhaps, just ask Davao, Philippines mayor Rodrigo "Dirty Harry" Duterte.
Duterte has completed 2 successful terms as mayor of Davao and has, during that time, transformed Davao into one of southeast Asia's safest cities. When confronted about sidestepping the judiciary system, he had few words to say in his defense.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about vigilantism, but if someone is holding one of my family members hostage, you can bet that I will shoot first and ask questions later!
